Mazhu (or Maju or Mazu)

A design piece, based on Chinese art/design styles from the 1970s.

Mazhu, often revered as an Ocean goddess, is actually based on a real person in Ancient times. It's said she became a Shenxian. Or the equivalent of a Saint in western terms.

Mazhu is the most widely known in South China, and even more among Chinese colony descendant cultures outside of China, throughout the Asian islands.

There are still reports of sightings of her out on the sea in a red gown, or saving the lives of people out at sea.

I had so much fun playing with these colors! Especially creating a BLACK Mermaid/Undine. Usually Mermaids are depicted as fair skinned, and NOrthern European looking... but, actually in Greek Ancient Mythology, they depicted the Ocean goddess Calipso as being dark skinned... and in many films is played by a darker skinned woman sch as Vanessa Williams, and even recently the Pirates of the Carabean...

Surprizingly, I've seen other versions of Ocean goddesses being depicted as also having dark skin.

In Western Culture "white" is often seen as feminie" and "Black" or "dark" is seen as Masculine... but, in the Eastern Culture, it's the Dark or black side of the Yin-Yang whcih is called "Yin" that represent Female energies, and the White sides, called "Yang" which represents Male energies.

So, it's totally apropriate.

I would like to create more dark or Black Mermaids.

I'd been wanting to get some sort of picture to flow out of me for quite some time of this specific theme... I'd also like to do more like this...

But, for a while, I just couldn't quite get it to come out right...
I'm glad it did this time:

I kind of like to think of them as their flows coming together... and their ripples overlapping... or something...

* Another thing I need to point out is that this piece was inspired by artwork by another artist. The details of the art published on Deviant Art has the details. But, this is my original "inspired by" version.

This is a bit older.... I made it back in 2005.

Interestingly, There was a Web Seminar held last month, which I was participating in. And, when I was listening along with the 1st guided Flowdreaming I kept seeing the dragon which I tend to see in my sleeping dreams. I kept seeing his tail, and his scale, and my arms were holding onto him and he was pulling me along.

Usually, this Drgaon (Chinese) is white and golden.
